The Drum on a map from 1898. |
The Drum had been a beerhouse prior to 1795 when it was under another name. The name Drum had come about when the landlord in the early 19th century (Thomas Shaw) had been given a drum by Mottram Band for whom he used to play. In 1841 he bought the Drum and adjoining cottages and built a further four cottages (as seen on the map). These cottages are still there. Also the well marked on the map provided the water for making the beer and is still present today. The Drum however is not. It closed in the 1860s and was demolished sometime around 1950.
