The Friendship Inn at the end of Newman Street c.1960. |
The Friendship Inn started life as a beer house called Friendship House that dated back to around 1850. It was situated on the northern side of Newman Street (formerly Newton Street and before that Chapel Street) and Commercial Brow. The Friendship was known locally as "Johnny Mannions" after the Irishman who was landlord from 1896 until his death in 1922. His daughter Mary took over until the Friendship Inn closed in 1937 and was demolished in the early 1960s. The site of the former inn is now occupied by residential flats called Lyme Court.
