Boars Head (Town Centre, HYDE)

The Boars Head (on right) looking down George Street c.1955.

The Boars Head can be traced back to before 1870 most likely around 1840. It originally occupied the second property on the left as you looked down George Street West from Newton Street. Sometime around 1900 the property on the corner of George Street West and Newton Street was purchased and the pub was expanded. By 1968 it was the only building on the south side of George Street West as most of the terraced housing had been cleared as part of a regeneration project. The Boars Head closed in 1974 and subsequently demolished to make way for the construction of the M67. It's exact location today would be the start of the slip road off the M67 that takes you to the bottom of Market Street.
