Norfolk Arms (Town Centre, HYDE)

Rear view of the Norfolk Arms in the 1950s.

The Norfolk Arms was situated at 10 Market Place. It was built sometime in the late 18th century and was the principal hotel in the area. In 1829 there was a tragic event. At a meeting of mill workers the floor in the meeting room of the hotel gathered a crowd of around 700. The room was only 15 yards long and 7 yards wide and was expected to hold 300. The floor collapsed into the cellar and tragically 29 people were killed. It was called "May's Downfall" after the lardlord of the hotel at the time John May. The Norfolk Arms closed in 1960 when Market Place was being redeveloped and the licence transfered to a new pub called the Apethorn on Knott Lane. It was demolished in 1964.
