The Cheshire Cheese in 2007. |
The Cheshire Cheese was situated at 136-138 Market Street opposite the junction with Union Street. I'm unsure as to when it was built but it was certainly before 1870. In fact there is a chance that this pub may have been rebuilt at the turn of the century but I've not been able to confirm this yet although it has gone through many facelifts in its time. When the artist LS Lowry moved to Mottram in 1948 he became a frequent visitor to this pub. The pub closed in 2009 and became a restaurant called the Cheshire Grill. As of 2012 the former Cheshire Cheese is an indian restaurant.
