Unidentified Boozers (Hollingworth, HYDE)

Was 105 Market Street the Friendship beerhouse?

Some unidentified beerhouses exist for Hollingworth. In the 1830s there were at least a dozen beerhouses. I've given dates at to when I'm certain they were in existance:

Craven Heifer (Hollingworth) 1832
Friendship (Market Street) 1832-1851
Star Inn (Market Street) 1910
Wood's Beerhouse (Market Street) 1832-1850

  1. Yes, I believe it was. I lived in that house for 15 years. In the 1907 Ordnance Survey map the building is marked a 'Club', in the cellar are the large stone shelves which I assume would have held the beer barrels, and there is a reference to the occupancy in the 1901 census lists the place as 'Beer House'. I'd heard from other sources the use of the name 'Friendship Inn'. Internet searches for that only appear to reveal the current pub in Mossley of the same name.

  2. Oh and forgot to mention the old stone built toilet block in the back yard which has since been mostly demolished. Being approximately 25 ft long and 10 across isn't quite your average family use loo :)

  3. I now live in a house on Hadfields avenue at number 6 which is just off Market street where this house is and can confirm that this house too was also part of the old pub which used to be here. I believe that the pub was a large 'L' shape which ended at my house and started with what is now 105 Market street, or perhaps the other way around. The basement has been converted into a habitable space in my house but there's a small hatch which leads into a large basement which goes under the other houses which was the old pub cellar. The house is on many different levels and has abnormally low ceilings, I would love to have seen what it looked like in its prime as the old pub. Thank you for the information, I've always wanted to learn more about our house's history.
