Commercial Inn (Newton, HYDE)

The Commercial Inn c.1900.

The Commercial Inn was situated at 2 Commercial Brow. I'm unsure as to when the inn was built but in the from the 1830s until the 1850s it doubled as a courthouse and gaol. As the above photo shows, coaches were a familiar sight outside the Commercial as it was the terminus for a route which operated to and from Manchester. The advent of the railway coming to Hyde ended this service. The inn was used for various organisations and events organised by the nearby St Pauls church although the churchgoers themselves tended to frequent the nearby Friendship Inn instead. I'm not certain as to when the Commercial Inn closed but it was still around in the 1980s. Today the former Commercial Inn has been converted into residential flats after being commercial property.
