New Inn (Hattersley, HYDE)

The New Inn c.1910

The New Inn was situated on Mottram Road in Hattersley. It's been said the inn dates back to the 1600s when it was used by highwaymen. As to what the inn was called before 1830 I'm not sure but the New Inn was first licenced in 1856. Around 1960 the inn was extended when the garages next door were demolished and a vault was created. This was to accomodate new trade from the newly created estate at the rear of the pub. Myra Hindley and Ian Brady lived on the road directly behind the New Inn and were regulars at the pub. The New Inn was also one of the pubs that Ricky Hattons parents ran. His father turned the cellar into a boxing gym. The New Inn closed in 2012 and the site has planning permission for new houses. At the time of writing the New Inn is in the process of being demolished.
